St Louis Guidance


Guidance refers to the range of learning experiences which assist students to make informed choices- personal and social, educational, and career- and enable successful transitions.
Sheila Murray is the school's Guidance counsellor and is a member of the IGC (Institute of Guidance Counsellors)

SCHOOL GUIDANCE POLICY
Guidance is regarded as a core element of the school's overall programme. The Guidance programme seeks to respond to the needs of the students at all stages of their education in St. Louis Secondary School.
The objectives of the Guidance programme are underpinned by the legislative requirements and are informed by the best practices disseminated by the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and the National Centre for Guidance in Education. Guidance here is viewed as a continual development process which begins prior to the entry of the student into St Louis Secondary School.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES;
The aims of Guidance include:
• To provide a framework for the delivery of the school's guidance programme.
• To ensure a structured response is in place to meet the personal, educational, social and vocational needs of the students.
• To ensure that all students, are catered for and included in the guidance activities of the school.
The objectives of Guidance include:
• To help each student become aware of her talents and abilities and how best to utilise these to reach her optimum potential through engaging with education.
• To assist each student in the identification and exploration of various educational and career opportunities open to them.
• To enable students to grow and to take responsibility for their own selves, their learning and their careers.
• To assist in the provision of information so that students may make informed decisions aware of possible consequences and implications.

THE ROLE OF THE GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR
There are three main areas in which the Guidance Counsellor operates, educational counselling, career counselling and personal counselling. Guidance works in conjunction with the students, the parents/guardians, the management and the staff of the school. It is through a collaborative approach that students experiencing difficulties will be given the necessary support to optimise their learning.
The role of the Guidance Counsellor is one which is formative, informative and consultative. It helps direct and develop students' capacity to become self-directed and independent learners, equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to make informed decisions. This is carried out in consultation with the students' parents/guardians and with other members of staff.

PERSONAL GUIDANCE
Personal guidance is a key part of the school guidance programme. This can range from brief interventions, once-off meetings, to regular meetings with students either on an individual or group basis. Such interactions may be part of the developmental learning processes of students but may also result from students' personal crisis. Personal guidance may include personal counselling, educational counselling, career counselling or a combination of these.
Counselling is available on a referral basis. Students are referred by management, staff, parents, or they may self- refer. During and after counselling the Guidance Counsellor will consult with teachers and other relevant and concerned parties on a regular basis to monitor progress, to discuss how pupils are coping and to plan for further support.
The Guidance Counsellor is trained regarding the various developmental stages of adolescence and the related issues which may arise during this phase of development. She will draw upon different theories of counselling and engage in an eclectic counselling approach. Guidance activities include:
• Publicising the role of the Guidance Counsellor, the guidance service and systems, to the students and to the parents of incoming students (at the 'incoming students' parents meeting' in May prior to entry)
• First year classes meet with the Guidance Counsellor for one/two sessions upon entry to the school to assist with their transition from primary school and to explain the service and system.
• Initiating/ facilitating/ consulting with pupils, teachers and parents when particular circumstances arise indicating that a pupil may be in need of counselling on a personal issue.
• Liaising with school management and pastoral care personnel on such issues (Year Head, Class teachers, Chaplain etc.)
• All Students are seen by the Guidance Counsellor on a request or referral basis

CAREER GUIDANCE
The issue of career guidance is one which is especially pertinent at senior cycle and the ways in which the Guidance Counsellor fulfils this role include:
• The Guidance Counsellor is available at Parent/Teacher meetings.
• Timetabled classes with TY, Fifth and Sixth Year students.
• Follow up meetings and telephone conversations concerning career issues between the Guidance Counsellor, students and parents as required.

 

 

The School Chaplain

The primary responsibility of the school chaplain is to provide the spiritual support to school community in which they are based. This involves bringing a 'faith-presence' to their role in the school. The chaplain works with the staff in carrying out this role within the school community, which extends to the wider parish community.
This role varies from teaching transition year modules, organising prayer services/Masses, school retreats, meeting students on an individual basis, working closely with the pastoral care team in the school.
The Chaplain's priority is to treat students with respect and dignity in all situations within and beyond the school.

The Chaplain will exercise their Pastoral role by

 

• Providing personal contact with individual students.
• By class contact
• Through Religious worship
• By maintaining an interest in extracurricular activities in the school.
• By getting to know as many individual students as possible personally

 

The Chaplain will exercise their Religious role by

 

• Ensuring the provision of liturgies and Para liturgies in the school at the beginning of year, Christmas, Ash Wednesday and the graduation mass for 6th years.
• Organising retreats

 

The Chaplain will exercise their role in extracurricular activities by

 

• By organising and being available to go on School Trips
• By supporting Charity fundraising
• By encouraging young people to get involved in extracurricular activities.
• By being involved in the St. Louis Network, St. Louis Africa Day and Worldwise Global schools events.

 

The Chaplain will exercise their role in relation to the staff by

 

• Cooperating with the principal and all members of staff
• In keeping with her pastoral role will be available to the staff
• Working closely with the Guidance Counsellors, and Pastoral Care Team.
• Be a member of the Care Team and attend meetings.

 

The Chaplain will exercise their role in relation to Parents by

 

• Being available to parents
• Offering support and encouragement to parents who are in difficulty

 

The Chaplain will exercise their apostolic role by

 

• Encouraging links with the local Parish(s)
• Encouraging students to take part in the life of their Parish.
• Meeting the Parish Priest regularly
• Inviting the local Parish Priest to take part in special School celebrations.
